England, 18. Jahrhundert.

A well made and acted film. The music and cinematography were gorgeous. Plot was rather meandering and there's not much character work here. I wish more had been done to get me to actually feel invested in Ann Lee. Amanda Seyfried's performance is amazing and one for the books. She's always been a highly underrated actress. This may be her best performance yet, and her Oscar snub is even more egregious after watching her in this role.
This is one of this films you can appreciate the artistry behind it (I can't believe they made it for only 10 million dollars!) and the boldness but you wish you found the story more engaging. It must have looked amazing on the big screen.
Is this the most powerful musical ever? Seriously I thought I was having a religious experience once that pumping breath and music began. Everything was do exquisitely intentional and emotionally effective. Director Mona Fastvold and actress Amanda Seyfried have converted me! :open_hands_tone1::clap_tone1::ok_woman_tone1:♀:raised_hand_tone1:♀:ok_woman_tone1:♀
While I loved so much about this movie, it left me wondering why this story ... now? I have a few readings: as a critique of our overstimulated modernity, or as a praise to a charismatic society in the time when so many of us are desperately looking for sense of belonging. Yet the movie is not making any compelling argument. And without it, it is just an interesting story, a good, masterfully made movie, which could've been a truly great one.
I'm fairly anti-religion but if I was gonna join one, the Amanda Seyfried choreographed dance religion may win me over🏼♀
