loved the ending.
Watched this one in a bit of a hazy state, but I still came away with a strong impression of what makes it special. The ending definitely felt satisfying, it tied things up well emotionally—but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for something a bit more profound or mind-blowing, considering how cool and heavy the core concept is. Maybe that’s just me putting too-high expectations on a movie with this kind of philosophical setup. The atmosphere is one of the strongest parts. That grungy, gloomy, almost post-apocalyptic vision of the afterlife is just so well executed. I love how surreal little details are scattered throughout the world—not necessarily in your face, but enough to really sell the tone and make the setting feel alive (or dead, I guess?). It’s bleak but also weirdly charming, and that tone is super unique. The concept itself—an afterlife just for people who died by suicide—is edgy, yeah, but it walks that line well. It feels darkly comedic without ever getting disrespectful, and the world it builds around that idea is fresh and imaginative. I hadn’t really seen this kind of thing before. The characters didn’t hit me on an emotional level the way I hoped, but they’re interesting and well-acted across the board. Everyone feels like they have their own story, and it makes the journey feel layered even when it leans on the simplicity of a love story. Speaking of which—the romance didn’t completely sell me, but it worked for the structure of the film and gave the narrative a bit more purpose. And in the end, I do think the message lands. I really liked the underlying themes—numbness, second chances, the search for meaning in a place where you’re not supposed to find any. There’s something quietly hopeful about it, even in all the gloom. That, paired with a solid soundtrack and some genuine passion behind the project, really gives this film its charm. Would definitely rewatch it again when I’m more alert. I feel like I might connect with it more or catch details I missed. Right now, I’m just stuck between ratings. I liked it a lot but also feel like there was potential to push the concept even further.
Such a nice and atmospheric movie.
I think the problem that so many indie movies seem to have is that they have an interesting backdrop for a movie with a specific ending in mind but they have problems filling out the middle part of the movie. This movie was fairly interesting when we see what happened to the main character and are introduced to his world and new acquaintances. But then there is just some random stuff that seems like filler until we get toward the final resolution. I think this movie needed a little more something - maybe darker, maybe more absurd, I don't know. It sure could have used more John Hawkes. follow me at https://IHATEBadMovies.com or facebook IHATEBadMovies
