Thought it was going to be more of a story line closer to the revolutionary war but it ended up being a good surprise about him at a young age coming up as an officer in the British army. The filming and plot development was very good. The intimate relationship between Washington and his militia was very well done and the importance of courage and change was a fantastic message to watch develop.
Young Washington is a 2026 epic historical war drama directed by Jon Erwin, focused on George Washington’s early life and his role in the French and Indian War between 1753 and 1755. It follows his journey from a young colonial surveyor into a military figure shaped by conflict, loss and responsibility, presenting a strong, straightforward narrative built around action, leadership and patriotism. The film leans heavily into its historical setting and delivers an accessible biographical account of Washington’s early challenges, supported by confident direction and a consistent sense of purpose throughout. William Franklyn Miller leads the cast with a strong performance as George Washington, supported by a large ensemble including Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Kelsey Grammer and Mary Louise Parker, all contributing to a solid overall presentation. The main drawback is its length, running over two hours and occasionally feeling stretched. Even so, it maintains momentum and remains engaging. Overall, it is a straightforward historical drama that prioritises storytelling and character development, with a clear focus on Washington’s early reputation and rise. To start I have to say I had an incredibly negative theater experience. I was seated in front of an amateur historian (I assume) providing commentary throughout the film. So I can’t entirely rule out that this may be influencing my opinion. Having said that, this was a fairly mediocre movie. There are some moments of entertainment but it primarily comes across as propaganda with hints of religious undertones. The writing bounces between rallying speeches, references to divine greatness, & historical colorful foreshadowing to the coming revolution. The writers were clearly proud of the line "Even a pawn can take a king," as it’s said like five times. Still all that is relatively inoffensive making this at least watchable.
It was great but honestly it just touched on a very brief moment of George Washingtons life compared to something like the Michael Jackson movie expanding more on his golden 80 years. overall a 6/10 movie, Andy Serkis was great in the movie too bad he died pretty quickly there.
This movie was amazing. I got to see an early screening of the film and was blown away by the story, message, and scenery. I’m not an expert on the life of George Washington, but what I do know was accurately portrayed. George Washington was America’s first president for a reason. This movie reminds us of that and the foundations of American values.
