On a visual and vibe level, it's pretty good. At the story level it begins ok, it's good when it's start getting weird. Sadly it's quickly apparent that there's no story any more and the whole thing is the [spoiler]it was all a dream/subconscious thing[/spoiler] trope. There are good parts in the beginning, the job interview, the talk with the mother (even if I've already seen pretty much the exact same scene in other movies), the arrival at the motel. I'm a bit uncomfortable with the underlying message though. As usual it's presented as a feminist work from a woman, but is it ? In the end she goes through with it and ends up with a crown, making her a queen, highlighting her mastery of her own body, sure. But in between ? The whole motel experience is just a metaphor for abortion. (In the beginning I was wondering whether the whole clinic and the motel they sent her to was fake, like it exists in the US, going into a kind of sequestration story where they would force her to finish the pregnancy). And there are lots of ambiguous messaging. - She refers to herself as "broken", because she thought she couldn't get pregnant, not a good start. - The end scene presents the abortion (at a very early stage) to be as painful as actual childbirth. - The whole absolute weird experience is traumatic and alienating And mostly, the main symbolism of the climax scene. There is Lilian (amazing performance by the way), who is the archetypal free girl: no boyfriend, drinks, smokes, enjoys her time at the spa, ambiguous lesbian. And not only is she presented as evil (at some point you wonder if she's a ghost or a devil), what is the whole motel metaphor's goal ? To literally [spoiler]kill her, and make her eat broken glass to, quote: "make her feel it"[/spoiler]. That's a bit much. Anyway, artistically it's a good first shot. Though the [spoiler]"it was all a dream"[/spoiler] is always disappointing since you usually spend the whole movie looking for different theories that would all have been better.
