Deva, despite Shahid Kapoor's exceptional performance, falls short as a mystery thriller due to its convoluted narrative, slow pacing, and lack of engaging suspense. Deva is a remake of the Malayalam film Mumbai Police, but it attempts to refine the original's narrative into a more mass-appealing format with Shahid Kapoor in the lead role. Shahid delivers an exceptional performance, showcasing his range as he navigates the complexities of his character, Dev Ambre. However, despite his strong presence, the film struggles to maintain a gripping narrative. The suspense fails to engage the audience effectively, resulting in a screenplay that lacks the tightness expected from a mystery thriller. Director Rosshan Andrews has made noticeable improvements in treatment compared to the original, but the film still feels convoluted at times. The pacing is slow, particularly in the first half, which focuses heavily on character development but often overstretches certain dynamics. While the cinematography and action sequences are commendable, some visual effects come off as gimmicky, detracting from the overall experience. The background score enhances the film's intensity, yet it cannot fully compensate for its narrative shortcomings. Overall, Deva presents an intriguing premise with potential but ultimately falls short of delivering a compelling mystery. The film's flaws—such as loose threads and underdeveloped characters—prevent it from reaching its full potential. While Shahid Kapoor's performance is a highlight, the film's lack of engagement and suspense may leave viewers wanting more from this adaptation. Instagram: @streamgenx
Heavily inspired by his old movie but we'll executed. Rosshan Andrrews knows how to build tension and the first half delivers on that promise - tight, stylish, compelling. Shahid as the maverick cop has the swagger to carry it. But the second half loses the plotting discipline and the twists pile up past the point of coherence. And the main drawback comes into the motive of Deva killing his friend as they changed it from the original one.
