Stir of Echoes has a lot of things going for it. The plot is interesting. It moves well. The acting is solid. I just don't know if it entirely holds up from my previous viewings. The premise that since getting hypnotized, Tom becomes a faucet for paranormal activities didn't exactly work for me. Then once the wife and son meet up with the Hallorann-type character that didn't really go anywhere, made me question that entire sub-plot. I recall really liking it in the past, and I remember a lot from the film, but on this viewing it worked less for me.
A very good supernatural thriller based on a Richard Matheson novel. It was released on the heels of "The Sixth Sense" which was a huge success and really overshadowed this flick. I wouldn't say "Stir Of Echoes" is frightening it does have a number of desperate moments when Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) or his family are in peril. The mood and personality of the Witzky's neighborhood is nicely portrayed and is key to the film's success. Ghost frights are really minimal. The movie ends with a decent twist that wraps up a well spent 90 minutes.
This is a nice paced thriller movie, the story is not original but it is displayed in a nice way.
There is a lot to like about this film. Plot is engaging and well paced. Good cast and acting, good suspense with some unsettling imagery in brief glimpses. In my opinion, the scenes featuring the wife talking to the man who has insights could have been cut, since she never relayed any of that information to her husband it served no purpose to the plot other than to build frustration with her character. Also, had to chuckle when she was honking her car horn while picking up her husband and the lights turning off tipped her off to trouble when I would have assumed that meant he was on his way out the door.
Kevin knows there is a dead body.
