This all could have been avoided if he just started a podcast like a normal dude
Hugh Grant was magical in this.
While some may view Heretic as an attack on religion (most Mormons certainly will), I saw a great back-and-forth debate regarding theology and religion that was left open for interpretation. This is where the film best succeeded. I particularly enjoyed the element of understated danger in the first act, interrupted by bits of humor. But as the film begins to embrace its horror characteristics, it becomes less interesting and more formulaic.
Like most A24 films, the first half (maybe two thirds) was extremely well done and intriguing. Unfortunately, it feels like the writers ran out of gas, or maybe lacked the capacity to finish their idea in any meaningful way. This could have easily been a 9 or 10 if the writing quality didn't take a nose dive for the final act. The acting was exceptional, and the subtle but effective sound design kept the tension high. The best scenes were just three people in a room talking, which sounds like an insult, but I mean that as a compliment. Overall I give it a 7/10, which is more like a 9/10, 9/10, and 4/10 for the first, second, and third acts.
I've never seen someone pull a rug as slow as in this movie..
