Morgan Freeman and Jet li are both great actors alone but together they’re a good tuning. Still an amazing film with heartwarming moments, beautiful piano music and some kick arse action..
A lot of people just stick this under the generic Action/Kung Fu film, but it really isn't as it has a very sad story and it is very relevant to today as it shows how Blackmarket slavery is still very much a thing and how this horrible thing is something that a lot of people turn a blind eye to. Jet Li (Danny) is raised like a dog since a child by a British gangster played Bob Hoskins (Bart) and throughout this film you hate Bart and you want to see Danny break free from this horrible world, Jet Li gives one of his best performances with his eyes actually being something that makes you feel for him during the film seeing moments of sadness, confusion, emotionlessness but even joy as he starts to have a regular life with a family played by Morgan Freeman (Sam) and Kerry Condon (Victoria). Throughout the film, you want to see Danny get out of this horrible world and have a regular life full of love. Now I would be amiss to not talk about the action and boy, oh boy the action is amazing in this film with Jet Li and the stunt team showing some really great chops with some amazing fight choreography and also just amazing stunt working in general, with some of the action is very R Rated and by the end of the film becomes so satisfying. But this movie isn't perfect, I found the bit where the family start to help Danny to be very weird as they don't react like a regular family as they do not show any concern and more or less just open the door to him and don't ask any questions or even seem scared that this man who obviously was a slave doesn't know anything about his past or tells them anything about this past. Also, the editing in this film like a lot of Louis Leterrier movies can be really choppy and even jarring at times to the viewer, the sad thing is Louis Leterrier is actually a pretty good action director and this editing technique really does bring the quality of the film down. Other than the two negatives above, this film is really good and it will keep you invested with its awesome action and even heartbreaking story at times with Jet Li giving one of his best performances in my opinion. Definitely worth a watch. I give it a 7.5/10 as it is only a few things that let it down from being an 8/10.
I recall watching this movie as a kid when my dad rented movies everyday at Blockbuster (wow I'm only 25 years old and I already feel ancient saying that) and I rewatched it today because my dad was watching it and told me to join (I think he loves this film lol). Honestly, I remembered it being somehow more action driven? but this rewatch made me realize how heartwarming & heartwrenching the entire story was 😢 also the cinematography is great and the cast is pretty stacked! As a kid I recognized Jet Li (my dad was/is a big fan of action films, rented them all the time from Blockbuster), Morgan Freeman (I had watched several of his movies in my childhood too, probably from Blockbuster as well) and even Bob Hoskins because my dad rented Roger Rabbit (yes, AT BLOCKBUSTER) and I watched it when I was 10 years old, but now as a young adult who watched -and loves- Better Call Saul I'm thrilled to find a young Kerry Condon here!! Overall, it’s a very good and captivating film, the ending gives me a warm feeling of hope 😊 I find Bart to be a really interesting character, he successfully captures the spirit of a manipulative and abusive parent, with little slightly charismatic moments that make you think _"okay maybe he kinda means well this tim--oh nevermind I just remembered what he did"_. And as someone whose mom died years ago (rip), some mother related moments really got me emotional haha... I truly related to Victoria when she said maybe it was easier to not remember your mother too much so you wouldn't miss her a lot. I really miss her... p.s.: thanks dad for making me watch a lot of movies since I was a kid! I love my dad :)
I’ve been wanting to watch Unleashed for a very long time and while I’m really bummed that it took me so long to finally watch it I’m glad I did because it was awesome and I loved it. I watched the unrated version, by the way. The movie wasn’t quite what I was expecting but not in a bad way at all. I thought there was going to be a lot more action but all of the non action stuff in the movie was great and the action did not disappoint at all. Jet Li, Morgan Freeman, and Bob Hoskins were all fantastic in this. I also loved that the music was done by Massive Attack. Definitely want to rewatch this again soon.
> "Like my sainted mum used to say, "Get 'em young, and the possibilities are endless."" As a kid I thought this movie was badass. On this rewatch I still really enjoy it but am curious how they were able to get Jet Li, Morgan Freeman and Bob Hoskins in this. It is a unique story that I am not sure would be made today. Can't go wrong with Jet Li martial arts either.
