The problem with American Genius is that it doesn't know what it wants to be. As entertainment (each episodes declares it is a dramatisation) it takes incredible people and makes them dull As education, it simplifies, misconstrues, dramatises, rather than remain accuracte End result is it sits badly between those two categories.
