this season has been fantastic... loved it, really hope we get more

As a huge fan of the original 'Dexter' who hated the series finale and most of the things that happened after S5, really couldn't get into 'New Blood', and found 'Original Sin' OK but quite flawed, I came into 'Dexter Resurrection' rather late and with the lowest expectations. Having now watched the entire first season, hoo boy was it a pleasant surprise, and then some! Michael C. Hall is as good as ever, Dexter's relationship with Harrison has found its balance, with him acting as his moral compass and anchor to his humanity, Peter Dinklage made a chilling and twisted villain, and having Uma Thurman kicking ass never hurts either. The spirit of the OG show is all there, but New York makes for a nice change of setting allowing the series to take new routes. Resurrection seems to be the perfect title for an overall fantastic continuation, because they've beaten a dead horse back to life and got it kicking. This is the best Dexter has been since 2009, can't wait for season 2.

Season one honestly exceeded my expectations greatly, as recent seasons of Dexter have struggled, especially at sticking the landing, but that's not an issue here. A super talented and standout ensemble and a return to the basics, as well as callbacks to the very beginning. Great stuff, and Michael C. Hall continues to knock it out of the park as one of the best characters in television history.

I was not going to watch this show. Dexter had been on a steady decline after Season 4 before culminating in one of the worst finales in TV history. Their do-over attempt in New Blood then managed to botch the ending once again. Suffice to say, it seemed like this was a washed franchise. I only happened to glance at this show's IMDb ratings by chance and was shocked to see it had an absurdly high 9.0, higher than the original. Initially, I thought it was some sort of joke, but I decided to give it a chance, with heaps of skepticism. Here's the thing. New Blood was actually pretty strong at parts. Resurrection realized one of the key flaws that has plagued this series...trying to create an ending. It ditches that completely and just tries to give us a season of TV instead. There is a fairly rocky and messy reset in the first episode to get rid of all the baggage from New Blood and setup the new status quo. It requires a lot of TV logic and suspension of disbelief, but once that is done, the season is actually extremely entertaining. Though it does go through some plot arcs that might feel slightly familiar, it also has a unique concept at its core that I think works really well and is engaging. It does have a few unnecessary cameos from the original show via flashbacks, but it also fixes something I had started to find very annoying in New Blood. The voiceover narration. It's still there, but it does not feel like it is suffocating and self-serious and pretentious anymore. In general, this show goes back to having some more fun with some overtly campy moments instead of Dexter waxing poetic constantly. There is some serious star power in this show, but it's used so effectively, with all of the stars being used to just the right amount. There are flaws for sure. There are some very unnecessary side plots, e.g. Harrison's love interest and some very boring family drama of a very minor character. The ending feels slightly contrived in its logistics. These are minor quibbles overall though because overall, I think it's right up there with some of the strongest seasons of the original show. I think the writers finally understood that forcing a perfect ending isn't their strength, so instead they should just try to write a fun TV show.

This was a great season. It was a much better follow up to the original series than “Dexter: New Blood.” This felt more like Dexter and that was a good thing. It had the same tone, same humor, and same unexpected types of twists as the original. They didn’t need to reinvent the wheel because what Dexter fans wanted was actually more of the same. We wanted Classic Dexter and we got it here, with enough new additions and angles to make it a fun and exciting watch. I am interested to see where things will go next season with Dexter and Harrison now that they have a more honest and open relationship. I suspect that Harrison might want to follow in his father’s footsteps at some point and that might be a source of conflict. But, we will see.
