> If Shadow Love has a message, it’s that infatuation is the root of evil. From the Empress Dowager of Yao to the two emperors of Taijin, everyone is consumed by obsession to the point of nausea. Even after killing the people they claimed to love, they continue defying those very wishes — as if desire itself has replaced reason, mercy, and truth. The show is undeniably beautiful — the sets, costumes, and performances (especially Song Yi’s) are stunning — but all that elegance only highlights the ugliness of the characters’ choices. The first half drags endlessly, weighed down by foolish decisions and emotional chaos that could have been avoided with a moment’s thought. By the time the story finally finds rhythm, it’s too late for redemption — everyone has already been destroyed by their own infatuations. In short: A gorgeous tragedy where beauty hides rot, and love curdles into obsession. Verdict: Visually captivating, morally exhausting — proof that in Shadow Love, infatuation truly is the root of evil.
