> Immortal Ascension (2025) is a drama that starts with promise — and a sharp edge. The main character, Han Li, lives by a brutally simple code: if he can’t learn from you, he’ll eliminate you. It’s a cold, strategic mindset that fits perfectly in the harsh world of cultivation, and for the first half of the series, I was genuinely impressed. What makes the early episodes so engaging is how closely they resemble the pacing and tone of an anime or manhua. There’s constant forward momentum, minimal filler, and — thankfully — almost no unnecessary romance. It’s all about survival, power-ups, and navigating a world where kindness is often weakness. As someone who’s tired of forced love triangles and overly dramatic romantic subplots in xianxia dramas, this was a breath of fresh air. But ironically, that same strength becomes the show's downfall later on. The second half loses steam. As Han Li becomes more powerful, the stakes start to feel repetitive. The story leans into obvious traps, disconnected mini-arcs, and villains who show up just to get steamrolled. Without deeper emotional threads or meaningful relationships, it all starts to feel… hollow. The sense of urgency fades, and the clever, gritty survival tone from earlier is replaced with autopilot progression. One of my biggest disappointments was the way Han Li handled the women around him. Even though the source material isn’t romance-heavy, the drama hints at potential — three strong women show real emotional vulnerability toward him. Instead of exploring even one of those threads meaningfully, the show keeps Han Li locked in this cold, emotionally unavailable mode. That might be true to character, but from a storytelling perspective, it’s a missed opportunity to ground him as a human being. Mo Cai Huan, in particular, stood out for me. Her yearning, her emotional restraint, and the quiet heartbreak of knowing she can’t have Han Li — those moments had genuine weight. She deserved more. The writers teased something beautiful and tragic with her… then just let it slip away. Meanwhile, the main female lead, Nangong Wan, starts off strong but fades into the background quickly. For someone who should’ve been more central to the plot, she becomes almost irrelevant by the time we hit the final act. It’s frustrating to see a character introduced with presence and promise slowly become a footnote. In the end, Immortal Ascension is a drama of two halves. The first half is tight, thrilling, and hits like a cultivation-themed anime — fast-paced and ruthless. But the refusal to explore relationships or build emotional stakes ultimately holds it back. Han Li’s rise to power is impressive, but without real human connection or narrative payoff, it starts to feel like a climb to nowhere. Worth watching for the ride — but don’t expect to feel much once you reach the peak and the story isn't 1/10 of the novel so don't expect a new season with its current popularity.

This is China's only pure cultivation drama in recent years — no romance, just pure xianxia cultivation and witnessing the mortal realm. If you're fascinated by Chinese cultivation culture, we strongly recommend diving into this series! As a five-year xianxia devotee, having devoured the first three episodes, this is a bona fide cultivation drama with impeccable pacing and adaptation—zero filler, zero drag. This sets the definitive blueprint for how xianxia series should be crafted.
