# **A Softer, Shorter, But Still Warm Remake** When you compare *Family by Choice* to *Go Ahead*, the difference in **raw emotion** is impossible to miss. *Go Ahead* hit hard with its themes of **abandonment**, **reconciliation**, and the messy, painful healing of a found family. This remake doesn’t reach that same emotional depth — partly because of its **shorter length**, partly because it skips a lot of the backstory that made the original unforgettable. But where it *does* shine is the **romance**. It leans into the Korean‑style warmth and gives us something the Chinese version rarely does: **happy endings for everyone**, not just the main couple and the parent figures. It’s lighter, cleaner, and more optimistic — very typical of Korean family dramas. I went in knowing it wouldn’t beat the original. Seven Tan’s performance in *Go Ahead* is still one of the most memorable in the genre, and the emotional layering of the Chinese version simply can’t be replicated in a shorter format. But even with that expectation, this remake holds its own. It has its **unique blend** of sweetness, healing, and romance, even if some conclusions feel rushed or missing the emotional groundwork. Still, it’s a good watch — comforting, warm, and easy to enjoy if you don’t expect it to match the original’s emotional weight.

What a great Series! Awesome story, an up and down of emotions, great actors and at many points very funny. Watch it!!

After Lovely Runner, I think this one is my favorite drama I've watched this year. It had that same top yellow umbrella energy, even if regrettably no yellow umbrellas showed up. I liked how instead of going for the flashbacks thing, the story was fully told chronologically. The first couple of episodes had the main trio as kids, then they were teenagers up until around the midway point, and from then till the end it was all about their adult lives. I think this way of presenting the story really lent itself for us to properly get to know each character and understand their motivations when it came time to make hard decisions. The friendship chemistry was there, the family chemistry was there and so was the romantic chemistry. It all had the heartwarming moments as well as some heartbreaking ones. And there were no idle scenes. At no point was I ever bored. Each episode flew by and I was done with all 16 episodes before I knew what was going on. And I really think all the characters had interesting storylines in how the had to grapple with some aspect of their family relationships. Blood does make a family, but sometimes the bonds we choose can be stronger than those we're born into, and I think that was a sweet message. At the end of the day, family are the people who are there for you when you're struggling. And special shout out goes to the soundtrack and score. There were some lovely melodies and songs that really complemented the drama and made some scenes hit that much harder. Great drama all around. Not 10 stars because San Ha's mom got off waaaaay too easy. P.S.
There's no love triangle!
I watched Go Ahead (2020) when Family by Choice (2024) was released and I heard that Hyang In-yeop will star in it. I kept drawing parallels between the c-drama and this k-drama. The c-drama is better at giving backgrounds to the characters & showing all the amazing foods, but i like the chemistry between Ju-won, San-ha, and Hae-joon better. Bae Hyeon-seong is the MVP

It was good, but I prefer the Chinese version plus the Chinese version is longer.
