I will review each season's storyline separately but for the rest, I will review both seasons of the reboot together due to their similarities. **Pros:** The cast for the reboot seasons is pretty good with a lot of interesting and unique characters. At first, I did think there were too many influencer types in the mix, but eventually, their differences became clear. It was also nice to see that the wackiness of the characters was a little more toned down compared to Pahkitew Island. My favourite characters from both seasons are MK and Priya. MK is my overall favourite because her sarcastic humor is on point and her jokes were my favourite ones. Priya is my second favourite because having a contestant whose whole life revolves around being on Total Drama leads to very interesting dynamics. Speaking of the humor, the show is just as funny as I remember the older seasons being, with a lot of great jokes in the mix. Focusing on the storyline of S1, it has some great moments with
Priya's and Millie's friendship and even Bowie's and Raj's relationship
was well-handled. But the highlight of the season is
the plot twist with Julia, that she's actually a cold-hearted villain instead of the stereotypical Instagrammer. It results in MK's elimination which establishes her as a threat. Bowie was a decent villain, although, he should've done a little more to really cement his villainous side.
The second season had more great moments, especially with
Caleb's redemption after being voted out first last season. This also retroactively strengthens Bowie's play to do so. I liked the continuity that the second season had with the first, a lot of it felt like a natural progression from the first season. Characters such as Scary Girl and Nichelle had some development and the season was mostly played in a way that fits the information the cast would've gathered from the previous season. I especially enjoyed MK's and Julia's alliance which made perfect sense, since it might've happened in the first season as well, if Julia wasn't so pissed at MK. Another aspect I enjoyed was Caleb's and Priya's relationship which felt more realistic and believable than Emma's and Chase's in S1. The best moment from the second season however is when Julia uses the immunity idol she stole from Damian to eliminate Priya instead of herself. It's such a good plot twist since by then I had forgotten that Julia had the idol and it destroyed my thoughts that Priya would be a finalist two seasons in a row.
**Neutral:** A small side tangent is that due to the short run time and animated nature of the show, it can't delve all that deep into the alliances and how the votes of each elimination play out, particularly since Total Drama doesn't read out votes like Survivor does. I bring this up because I watched the other seasons before I watched Survivor and now that I have, this is the biggest difference between them and it does hurt a bit since the strategy is what makes Survivor so enjoyable to watch. But I understand that Total Drama has never done this due to its format, so I can't expect it to change that now. **Cons:** What I can complain about is the length of the seasons, which is only 13 episodes per season, since one production cycle was split into two separate seasons. This was done for All-Stars and Pahkitew Island as well, but the difference there is that those two are completely different seasons, with different settings and casts. Seasons 1 and 2 of the reboot are on the exact same island with the same cast of characters. There is no reason that these should've been two separate seasons. I would've much preferred one full-length season which would've allowed for more time to flesh out the characters. This brings me to my biggest problem with the reboot, especially S2, which is its unoriginality. All the other seasons had differences from the previous ones, with different casts and different locations. Season 2 of the reboot has neither. It is such a lame way to cut costs by just rehashing the same premise again. On top of all that, it doesn't have series mainstays like alternate endings or specials to tie the seasons together. These are the little things that in the grand scheme are inconsequential but made the series unique. Since the second season uses the same cast as the previous season, there are more moments I'm mixed about compared to the first season.
Emma and Chase don't have anything new to do this season, just doing the same as in the previous season, which results in them being pure fodder. Although I wasn't a fan of them in the first season either since it was a pretty dumb off and on again relationship that went nowhere. Axel's and Ripper's relationship felt too sudden and a little off to me, on top of that, it didn't go anywhere either. While most of the characterization was good, there were a few moments where it felt off. Nichelle immediately trusting Julia's fake documents was too out of left field, although it does reestablish Julia's villainy well. Caleb and Priya both trusting Julia on relationship advice was ridiculous, despite their troubled mental state, they were familiar with how manipulative she is and should've caught on to what she was doing.
