Naff. One believable character throughout (and played well by Mark Addy) with what is pretty much the only worthwhile story thread. Almost everything about the series just cries out how this was such a waste of the name, characters, actors themselves, and ultimately my own time. Piss-poor, like right 'up' there with the later seasons of Stella and really could've just been any other show of that ilk. Why did they even bother when clearly they didn't have anyone who could write for sh*t, let alone something actually relevant to the film? Not even asking for a rehashing of that, but just something worthwhile, honest, and believable. Made Last of the Summer Wine look like a documentary.
It has a certain nostalgic air thanks to the participation of the original cast, but if the film has ended up as a nice sample of working-class cinema but without much significance, the attempt to turn it into a series falters from the very concept. There is an attempt to update it, some fun references to the film, and a renewal of characters, but the exploration of the protagonists through their personal stories shows that it doesn't have much more to add to what little the original film already did.
I really enjoyed this series. Was it as good as the original film? No, but it gets close. Dave’s story arc is my favourite but Horse’s is a strong second. Gaz is a t!t as usual and there was a too little of Gerald and Guy (although I understand the latter was written out part-way through which left a couple of plot strands dangling). The social stories it covered were as relevant today as the underlying story of the original movie. Does it need a second series? Simply put: no. It ends well as it is.
4/10 POOR This show is 25yrs to late, there’s no story here, all the characters are two dimensional and not fleshed out. You end up having no feelings for any of the old characters and the few new ones are just horrible and obnoxious, I made it through episode 1 but it gave me nothing to return to it! Now two weeks later the episodes sit in my to watch box and I have no desire to watch anymore of them…. If this had been done within a few years of the movie it might have stood a chance!
Watchable enough but largely forgettable in that there wasn’t really any point to it.
