It was great, very reminiscent of Wes Anderson films. I don't understand the low rates.
I usually dig Simon's work, but this one was a miss for me. A lot of talking and walking without clear purpose, nor complex or interesting plot. The sillyness and goofiness is weak and the comedy non-existant. The ending is also open, so we don't even get a clear answer to the main question in the movie: Is Gef real or not? It may have some hidden meaning or something like that, especially taking count the last dialogue, but for me was not higher than a 3
One of those movies that’s hard to categorize and not for everyone. It’s billed as a mystery, but if you’re expecting a whodunnit with a neat little ending, you’re going to be disappointed. I enjoyed it and thought it was an interesting way to frame the conversation around belief in God / the afterlife. Are the believers hopelessly naive? Are they scammers? Does believing make them happier? Are the skeptics just the guy at the party everyone thinks is an a-hole?
Good GOD this film DRAGGED on and on and on. About half way through you know it's the girl throwing her voice, but for some reason with the proof in front of her, the girl literally doing it in front of the assistant, the assistant runs out like some drugged up moron and never tells her boss. In the real world, that gets your ass fired. Then it's clear at the end, the whole damn town is in on it. Some believe, but come on. The locked box? How did the ferret or whatever, get in there then? They have it trapped. But no, somehow this suckers this guy in deeper. Zero common sense. The only thing this movie is good for is the metaphor that only the black man sees how f**king stupid the whole thing is, but he's just going to roll with it because he's not changing any of the idiots' minds. This is US racism 101. The black man knows it's bullshit, but they would skin him alive if he doesn't keep "believing" with the dumb ass "white" people. I'd give it a flat zero to -2, except the Isle of Man is beautiful and the black guy's bluntness is hilarious. 0.8/10. Don't waste your time.
I am such a sucker for these dialogue heavy, "podcast-on-film" type productions, and Nandor Fodor is no exception. Some will bemoan its almost pointless narrative, but it's what's between the lines here that's important. How far are we able to suspend our disbelief for a simple moment of joy? Does everything have to be proven, clinical and cold-hard-factual all of the time or can the lines waiver for some wonderment and awe? And by extension, what drives people to fabricate these stories? To bring people entertainment and joy? Notoriety to their name? To be remembered much after they're gone? All this from a movie about a talking mongoose! Very cosy movie, and while threadbare in actual character arcs and resolution, it asks intriguing questions for me to chew on following my viewing. For me that's good enough, but I know most will not find the same enjoyment that I did.
