A solid monster movie that takes heavily inspiration from The Descent, but gives a more adventure-esque feeling to the viewer. I appreciated the abscence of CGI for once. And definitely wasn't expecting all the Lovecraft's references. It was an easy watch, tbh.
Kinda like *The Mummy*, *The Descent* and especially *The Pyramid* but it feels distinct enough. I never quite got the tone of this one, it's what sets it apart from other movies in this genre but it's a weird choice. You have this movie set entirely in darkness with a monster lurking and yet, it's only trying to be scary half the time. The rest of the time it's a drama/mystery/comedy-ish with fairly long stretches of conversation and I was forgetting there was actually a creature lurking around. This makes it a little boring sometimes and it's a tension killer but whenever there was hieroglyphs and puzzle solving I was captivated. Solid lore, I kept wanting to know more. It took an hour but the creature reveal was badass and I really dig the unique design. The costume or puppet or whatever it is looks amazing and they used practical effects for everything I think. Every kill was epic bloody gory. The mining site and caves look super believable but for some reason I never felt claustrophobic. Nice mix of scores, decent acting, characters are hard to tell apart, and wild third act. Overall, ***Gueules Noires*** was a decent creature feature.
