This movie is _Alright, Alright, Alright._
Not a lot happens during **Dazed and Confused**, but the characters and their personalities are enough that it doesn't matter. This is really just a snapshot of a particularly fun night in the lives of a group of drunk and stoned, but generally good hearted, mid-70's youngsters. Critics generally hail this as some kind of coming-of-age story, but it all feels like posturing to make it seem like they've interpreted it in some deeper fashion. It appeared to be nothing more than documenting a night out in the suburbs. The characters are all appealing in their own way, but Matthew McConaughey's "Wooderson" stood out more than the others. This is a good movie, but its significance seems overstated. It wasn't even "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" deep.
D&C attempts to be the Boomer version of American Graffiti and fails miserably. It's almost the exact storyline: last day of school, seniors moving on...however besides a kick-ass soundtrack and some pretty sweet rides, there is no comparison of quality. The brutal hazing that goes on for the incoming class is unbelievable and besides the "Party On" message, there really isn't much to offer. The majority of the cast are forgettables who never did anything of interest, the story weaves back and forth like a drunk driver without any real direction and the character development is just below Cheech and Chong. Matthew McConaughey is the only redeeming factor, and his "Alright, alright, alright" is the only notable quotable. Don't be mislead by the hype. There really isn't much to see here. At least with Fast Times at Ridgemont High you get to see some boobies...here, the sexist thing you see is Wooderson's GTO.
It feels a bit like Fast Times and I didn't like that either. I was worried this movie would be bland stereotypes in boring environment and it was. Relies on the fact Stoners will watch it and rate it high because its about weed and they like weed.. duh ..... awful
Nothing makes me wish I was 16 again like Dazed and Confused. It perfectly portays the magic of being young and stupid. It's the prefect high school hangout movie.
