This is mostly following a young woman taking power. But the whole movie is weird, not in a good or an interesting way, more of a general "hmmm, ok but why ?" vibe, like it never knows where it wants to go. It's supposed to be a post apocalyptic world. But apart from tales once or twice on tv - of whole cities with people killing their children then themselves - there's nothing. They live pretty comfortably, have electricity, alcohol, parties, cars, jetskis... Ah yeah, they say the food is not great. The gang is supposed to be what maintain order in the city, and keep others from coming in. But we never see any conflict, or someone else coming, or any of them doing any policing work, or any other kind by the way. According to the intro, women are supposed to be currency, like gas. But if there's certainly a culture that the men should lead, and a lot are probably prostitutes, this is a looong way from treating them that badly. The main subject is supposed to be the selection of the next leader. But there's not really anything showing that except them shooting at targets once. And there seem to be little elimination more like there are new candidates instead. No selection process, no progress, nothing. There's this whole thing about the leader wanting her to take part in the successor selection, even against the others, and even wanting her to win, he even kills one of the guys over that. But then their relation looks just as artificial as their falling out. She somehow discovers that she has
supernatural powers, inherited from her mother
. But it mostly just happens, is not really developed properly. So once all that removed, it could be about her story with the new girl. But then the ending scene is just
the girl going somewhere else
. It was presented as supposedly feminist. But, it's even mentioned, she's behaving just like the boys. And half of the scenes involve hot women doing sexy poses. Overall there is still an interesting enough progression in her story. With the
power
, the relationship with the new girl, her discovering her mother's story (that somehow she was the only one not aware as her sisters knew everything, and the new girl learned about it in a few days). But the whole thing feels a bit random.
[Venice '25] One of the problems with this Greek dystopia is that it's difficult to establish whether the exposure of male and female stereotypes is presented with an ironic eye, or simply a limited representation of a cinematic genre that the director has failed to adequately subvert. This places the film on unbalanced terrain that is never clearly defined. But at the same time, it's a narratively simple and aesthetically empty story, without providing many elements that establish a distinctive dystopian world.
