Riddled with early 30s doubt, anxiety and dread, Sacramento is a mumblecore comedy drama that will either leave you bored silly or tip the scales on your existential crisis. Some areas feel a little surface level and underbaked, but there is an unmistakable sense of heart throughout Sacramento that will connect with those that can relate with Glenn and Rickey's wobbly grapple with adulthood and it's unrelenting feeling of fear and self doubt. The more I reflect on this movie, the more I appreciate the maturity it displays when broaching this often mocked millennial topic, as well as the performances put in by Cera and Angarano. They're understated for sure, but I think that's what makes them so effective. Good movie, if these understated modern dramas are your thing.

As a big fan of Michael Cera, Sacramento was an easy win for me. This isn’t the raunchy, over-the-top Cera from comedies like Superbad—instead, it’s more in line with the quieter, thoughtful energy he brought to Juno, just with the perspective of an older character. The movie itself is simple and straightforward, focusing on character and story over spectacle, but that’s part of its charm. It doesn’t try to be bigger than it is, and that makes it all the more endearing. With its grounded storytelling and heartfelt moments, this one is an easy recommendation, especially for anyone who already enjoys Cera’s particular brand of understated humor. I wanted to love this movie because I really like all of these actors, but it's missing something to take it to the next level. I found both main characters pretty insufferable and thought the writing, especially towards the end, became increasingly hard to believe. I thought A Real Pain had a better execution of similar themes.

I chose this movie for my movie swap week with Joe. I kind of regret picking this after watching it. This just did nothing for me. I was kind of bored throughout. I didn’t like any of the characters. I honestly found them to be very awkward and unlikable. I couldn’t relate to them in the slightest. In a movie like this you have to buy into the characters and I never once did. I never cared about anything happening around them. I’ve never been a huge Michael Cera fan to begin with. I’m not saying he’s a bad actor, I just don’t care for his humor or style. Plus he might’ve had the world’s worst beard in this. They should’ve wrote more into the script for Maya Erskine because she’s hilarious. Unfortunately she’s a wasted character here. I suppose this was supposed to be a comedy/drama but I didn’t laugh once or feel any emotion. This was definitely a bummer for me as I had hopes of enjoying it.
