Con questo film ho completato la trilogia della guerra di Rossellini. Devo ammettere che non amo i film divisi in episodi, e per questo motivo — se dovessi esprimermi con un voto — non darei un punteggio altissimo. Ma è proprio questo il punto: Paisà va oltre ogni sistema di valutazione. È un capolavoro per ciò che vuole raccontare e per come lo fa: un viaggio drammatico e umano, che risale l’Italia dal Sud al Nord, raccontando la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale attraverso frammenti di vite diverse. Ogni episodio è una testimonianza forte e autentica. Al di là delle preferenze personali, resta un must watch per chiunque ami davvero il cinema. - With this film, I’ve completed Rossellini’s war trilogy. I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of movies divided into chapters or episodes, and that’s the main reason I wouldn’t give it a high score — but that’s exactly why ratings don’t always work. Paisà is a true masterpiece, both in what it tells and how it tells it. It follows Italy from South to North during the final stages of WWII, capturing different lives and moments in a raw, powerful way. Personal taste aside, it’s an essential watch for anyone who truly loves cinema.

I felt this finished stronger than it started, which perhaps reflects a need to adjust to the anthology structure, but few of the film's vignettes felt particularly compelling. Rossellini's direction is undeniable, and the neorealist themes and techniques are a powerful contrast to the Hollywood I've been watching lately from the same period. Ultimately though I appreciated the idea behind this more than the execution, although it may be one to return to in the future.
