It could've been a great movie. The story is very well-developed but near the ending it kind of loses its focus a bit. 8 out of 10 for me.
Amazing concept, the look of the movie is on point, but it just doesn't hit like it should, it feels like it could be something special, just never quite pays off, would recommend still though, the ending is very scenic
I've been wanting to see this for so long and big thanks to Shudder for making this available in the US. This is the definition of a film that doesn't know when to stop. It starts off promising with its home invasion/haunted house premise but then a whole bunch of other ideas kick in, it starts to go off the rails and not in an entirely enjoyable fashion. I'm not sure about some of the transitions and placement of flashbacks. That said though, the film is saved by a couple of fantastic moments. It contains some really compelling imagery, some chilling scares, and there's enough blood for the gore hounds. Had they made up their mind this could've been a much better film.
Interesting film with the atmosphere of some dark fairytale thanks to the haunting, beautiful music. I liked how many seemingly innocent comments all turned out to be pointing at what was going to happen later in the film. The characters were likable enough, had great chemistry with each other, the dialogues were fun, which is important in this kind of film, because basically nothing happens until more than half-way through the film so we just stuck with watching people talking. And the unexpected reference to Halloween 3: Season of the Witch made me chuckle, hah, one of my favourite horror films. I'd recommend watching the film if only for the story (I mean the final reveal, the first half of the film is a pretty basic setting for a horror film), I think it's quite unique. But yeah, for a horror film it wasn't /very/ scary, to be honest. If you hate jump scares, there is but a handful. If you love jump scares, the ones in the film are not scary at all.
Fantasy body horror with sepia and contrast dialed up to eleven. Starts off with realism, unfortunately the characters are uninteresting and unlikeable juveniles with no redeeming or relatable characteristics. Veers off into a mystery fantasy orgy of art nouveau, dolls and ballet as if trying to lean into finer arts, but tries way too hard and comes off as clumsy and tacky. Final act switches gears again and heads off into the horror with a finale that is unimpressive in both reveal and execution. Foreshadowing feels like checkboxes and the side story is a chore At least the resolution has something neat to offer, though it feels slightly ripped off from elsewhere as well.
