I am not exactly sure what I have just seen. This is absolutely not a favourite of mine.
A raw and ugly tale of debauchery, The Libertine tries to be offensive...and succeeds. The story follows famed writer John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, as his decadent lifestyle consumes him. Johnny Depp, Rosamund Pike, and John Malkovich lead the cast and give strong performances, but the characters are largely one-dimensional. Additionally, the cinematography is especially poor; giving the film a drab and grainy look. The Libertine is a bleak and morose film that fails to capture the fascination with John Wilmot.
This has such a star studded cast.. But it was a snoozefest.
There are precious few films that take place during the Restoration Era, and this was sadly disappointing. Given the setting, a certain degree of lewdness and irreverent humor is to be expected, but the constant vulgarity felt forced and hollow, like it was done just for the sake of being edgy. It started out promising but quickly lost steam and ended on a very depressing note. Overall not a very pleasant watch. If you're looking for something with a similar vibe that does it way better (and is more upbeat), I'd recommend Stage Beauty (2004).
This is single handedly the worst film ever written, produced, edited, and acted in. The heinousness of this movie is only outweighed by the supremely misleading marketing leading up to the films release.
