[Netflix] At 23, Jarand Herdal has directed a film with an outstanding atmosphere. Newcomer with "Everywhen" (2013) which he directed at the age of 16, he is undoubtedly a better director than screenwriter. His second film has a flimsy plot that cannot solve a dark aesthetic, a kind of "Alice in Wonderland" terrifying version. It's a failed product that has some virtues that can lead to more interesting projects.
I don't think this movie deserves all the low ratings here. It was esthetically pleasing, good atmosphere and it wasn't boring. But if you expect something new or unique, search elsewhere.
I was going to rate this a 6, but the closing shot--maybe the last minute?--boosted it a whole star for me. Nothing too surprising here, but very stylish at times.
Interesting premise, but after the initial mystery wears off, this is a very by-the-numbers horror that treads well worn ground. Middling, but not bad.
The mix between Hostel and Saw, but staying in neither, makes it very predictable. In short, very very normal. For a weekend day at the table
