Walking with Shadows is a visually impressive film, where the cinematography and the Nigerian landscapes truly stand out. Lagos is not just a setting — it becomes part of the story itself, adding both beauty and depth to the narrative. As a European viewer, it was eye-opening to get a glimpse into Nigeria’s queer communities, something rarely depicted on screen. It offers valuable perspective and highlights the consequences people still face in conservative societies, simply for being themselves. The acting is mostly underwhelming, but Ozzy Agu as Adrian delivers a strong and convincing performance, bringing real emotion to the role. The film also carries an important message — reminding Western audiences how easily we take certain rights for granted. Coming out can still be difficult anywhere, but compared to what Adrian faces in Nigeria, the contrast is striking. The script and character development, however, leave something to be desired. The story feels a bit too straightforward at times, and several side characters are left underdeveloped. Still, Walking with Shadows is a valuable and necessary film, carried by its important themes and stunning visuals. Rating: ⭐ 7/10 Cinematography: 9/10 Authenticity: 7/10 Production: 6/10
