I mean, look, how do you review a surrealist film by Buñuel? It’s explicitly anti-art, and it’s bewildering to make sense of as a viewer. Beginning with a short documentary on scorpion anatomy, it goes on to feature the skeletal remains of bishops on a rocky coastline, the wanton shooting death of a small child, a cow in a bed, a woman fellating the toe of a statue, and apparently Jesus himself emerging from the castle in the 120 Days of Sodom and ending with a cross festooned with the scalps of women. It’s a wild ride but I won’t pretend to have a good sense of what it means. And I’d rather watch someone like Maya Deren.

I don’t like surrealism and only really watched it because of the place it holds in film history. Not my cup of tea. Found it excruciating to watch. 2/10
