I was born on the day that Fred Hampton died. Strong cinema-verite style documentary about the murder of Chicago Black Panther figure Fred Hampton at the hands of the police. ] I have to admit that I have always known the name Fred Hampton and that he was killed but have never known any of the details so this was a fascinating one. And it's pretty powerful. You get to see Hampton talk a lot and see his public speeches and he sounded very rational and despite his ability to fire people up, he seemed remarkably calm. A very interesting speaker, even if he does overload you with words a little. The events that unfold, of course, are so tragic. In terms of form, there is no narration, the story is told purely through the montage of clips and imagery. And it was well done. It never dwelt on anything too long. The piece is pretty fluid and engaging. The only critcisim I would have is that it is a little repetitive. But at the half way point when we suddenly cut to his death scene and the soundtrack goes silent. Very powerful and effective. I wouldn't say it's something I enjoyed but it's an important and edifying film. And the events shouldn't be forgotten.
