I really enjoyed that and It's cast was strong, especially the main lead Charlie Plummer with a good performance also It's words were deep and thought it's script was decent. It reminded me of the film A Beautiful Mind with John Nash having the same Illness, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
I found this to be only a somewhat accurate depiction of living life w/
schizophrenia
. I wish that the script had focused more on the side-effects of the drugs used to treat it, b/c this is why many people stop taking them. The side-effects can cause a state akin to losing all sense of self and feeling, and one of the more prominent drugs used to treat this condition actually has a nickname for this state, b/c it's so prevalent. When Adam
stops taking his meds, the script indicates that he does so due to the fact that he was unable to properly taste his culinary cuisines. Yet, that would've been a lesser effect than the actual state that he was in. The other thing was, when he began taking the meds, he seemed to perk up, become almost happy, which is not the effect these drugs have. They simply keep the visual and auditory hallucinations at bay
. I really wish that the film had focused more on the actual nature of the disorder rather than the dramatization that was portrayed.
This was great. Mental health dramas often fall into the trap of being Oscar bait, being more focussed on performance than story. This rises above that, which isn’t to say Plummer isn’t great in his role. He is, but gives a subtle and understated performance rather than something showy and over dramatic. The film falls into the occasional Hollywood trap of sentiment and speechifying, but for the most part, it’s an honest and realistic look at mental illness, with a rather unique way of explaining what Adam is going through.
Schizophrenia runs in my family and I'm lucky not to have it as my generation was supposed to. I've had family that have had it and until this movie I never really understood what it was like and how it manifests. This scared the hell out of my but was such a blessing to help increase my understanding of what people who have this disease are going through. It makes me more likely to try and help defuse a situation if it seems someone is having a break and needs love instead of control or avoidance.
