Onto another whim- watching Peanuts things where Peppermint Patty is prominent, the rating is high, and/or it’s particularly notable. I don’t know if this is just in comparison to the latest special but I was not prepared for how much this delighted me. Going back to Charlie Brown as a nice guy uncool lonely loser who says ‘You know why that little red-haired girl never notices me? Because I’m nothing. When she looks over, there’s nothing to see. How can she see someone who’s nothing???’ is like coming home. Lucy’s break your arms fantasy, the two closets, the fence climbing, so many delightful gags. Peppermint Patty steals the show with an adorable performance. And everyone here sucks (positive). Even the most well intentioned like Linus and Patty are either condescending or dim respectively and only add to Charlie’s misery. As it should be- he is a reflection and exaggeration of the neuroses we have, and the people around him his self deprecation given form. Even his win has an air of pathetic silliness to it for achieving nothing and treating it like the best day of his life, but it still balances out the meaner-spirited humor nicely. This is Peanuts, do me.
