A psychological slow burn that will suck you into it's depressive atmosphere and when you think you have everything figured out, the final twist delivers a worthy shock.
The bad: This movie feels very slow. To paint the picture, the main lady will often speak slowly. After waiting for her to finally finish her sentence, then we wait silently with her (in vain) to get a reply out of the person she's talking to... only to have that person ignore her. She then turns away to stare at nothing or looks down at her food and *still* the camera lingers. Next it cuts to the lady making dinner again and sitting down at the table, just for her to get ignored again. Rinse and repeat. The pain of all the waiting pays off once you understand the plot later on but it still feels like watching paint dry. The music doesn't seem to fit well; there's too much of it and it came off random and distracting instead of purposeful. This is my first Hongkongese movie so it may just be a style that I'm not used to. The good: (some spoilers ahead) Some of the CGI hallucinations are interesting and visually pleasing. Secondly, the twist at the end is pretty good. Third, I was amused that the knife chopping down on meat over and over every day until it's mush seems to be showcasing the damaged repetitiveness of her life caused by her poor memory (she ends up repeating her actions unknowingly). The scene at the market really drives home the fact that you have no idea what strangers are going through, and brings to mind the struggles of people with dementia. It may inspire kindness and understanding in you. Final verdict: Not that enjoyable due to slow pacing but had a good enough payoff to make it worth watching for me. Maybe I'll rewatch it again someday to see if I can appreciate it more.
