3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Doctor Sleep’: 1. This film totally stands on its own and as a satisfying sequel to a classic. Not an easy task. 2. The Shining throwbacks gave me life. 3. I loved the villain and Abra was badass.
Better than i expected with great cinematography, nice plot, nice locations and also great cast with Ferguson in the lead as she was perfect for this role. It's a very well made movie and interesting even though it's almost three hours long. 7.7/10
Relies too heavily on the novels and Kubrick's film to ever really feel like it has legs enough to stand on its own. Although there are interesting bits in this film, it does not ever come to fruition in a meaningful way and often seems to misunderstand the thesis behind the novel it's based on. Instead, _Doctor Sleep_ chugs along at a dreary pace until its third act goes completely off the rails. For the majority of this film I thought it was decent. As soon as we got to the climax it became dreadful. Yikes.
Ok, I’ve been generous giving this a 9; for the most part it’s fantastic and deserves at 9, but it does have some disappointments and doesn’t work in places. I won’t say where or what, it’s up to you to watch and decide without any spoilers from me. I’m a huge Stephen King fan and The Shinning was one of my first real horror films I watched...oh so many years ago, and still love today. I have been eagerly awaiting this sequel and Ewan McGregor really played a great part. I loved the storyline overall. It’s something different for a change. Despite the parts that disappointed and let me down, it’s still a great film, however those let down parts were essential to the film. But, I believe it’s deliberate to leave it wide open for another sequel, and why not. The main girl child actress did well too. Thumbs up from me. Nothing could have ever compared to the original, no matter how hard they tried. But, it’s still a good film and it’s taken it off in to a new direction. I do feel I’m out of order giving it a 9, but I did really enjoy it as a stand-alone film with references to the iconic original, bringing back fond memories. Do watch, enjoy and don’t let the disappointing parts spoil the overall film. It’s a shame the happened at such incredibly important part/s. It was good to watch something different for a change...as many horror films are basically the same. Still not sure why I rated it a 9, I’m trying to justify it to myself and failing. I think my loyalty to Stephen King, but in fairness, I’m going to have to change that rating to an 8.
