A lot of talking that didn’t feel like much doing. Didn’t really side with Jean-Louis’ actions. Kind of glad it ended up sloppy for him.
Not typically the kind of movie that draws me in--too academic, too much philosophy, a little too "French." But there's something about it that stuck with me and I've been thinking about it for days now. There's an intense vulnerability that comes through from all three characters that struck me to my core and which transcended some of the windbaggery about Pascal and what not. I want to spend more time with these characters despite myself, and I think this deserves a rewatch. Will be interested to see more of Rohmer's work.
I don't think seemingly endless debates about philosophy, religion, and even mathematics make for a movie that is particularly my thing. And “My Night at Maud's” is exactly that for long stretches. When the titular night at Maud's begins, things do get a little more interesting, but the subsequent debates about morality and sex aren't exactly captivating either. The second half of the film does not change much, and the main character Jean-Louis remains rather unsympathetic and boring until the end. There is undoubtedly an audience for films like this, but it's not me.
First half was boring. Second half was ok. Barely. I don't get what made it worthy of an oscar nomination...
