I have to admit, The Pit was entertaining in its own quirky way. It mixes creepy moments with a touch of humor — sometimes it feels intentional, sometimes not, but it occasionally hits the mark. The beginning really drew me in; it had this mysterious, slightly offbeat vibe that I genuinely enjoyed. As the story progressed, though, I found myself caring less about what was happening. It’s not particularly scary or tense — more like a strange little ride that keeps going just for the sake of it. Jamie as a character had so much potential to be intriguing, but the whole “what’s wrong with him” storyline just fades away halfway through. I thought we were heading toward something deeper or darker, but instead, it’s abandoned. The film then suddenly shifts into a creature feature, which is fun in its own silly way, but it doesn’t really connect to what came before. It almost feels like two different movies stitched together: one about a troubled kid losing control, and another about little monsters in a pit. Still, there’s something oddly endearing about it. The creatures add to that charm — old-school effects, a bit clumsy but strangely sweet and horrifying, fitting perfectly into the mix. Some scenes genuinely feel eerie, only to be interrupted by something so ridiculous that you can’t help but laugh. It’s chaotic, but that chaos makes it oddly enjoyable, even if a bit meaningless. By the time it ends, I didn’t regret watching it, but I also didn’t feel strongly about it. I have a feeling, though, that it’s the kind of movie that will stick in my mind — not because it’s amazing, but because it’s just so wonderfully odd.
This movie is as weird as they come. It really feels like one of those novels with the strange covers they were selling at grocery stores at that time. A young sociopath gets a new babysitter that slowly learns this kid has some real problems beyond his strange behavior. Not sure I liked it, but I respected its audacity. Shot in Beaver Dam, WI...which I think is the only one ever. So there is that.
What the holy heck did I just watch? Buyer beware.
_The Pit_ is an '80s horror movie unlike any I've seen. The closest comparison is _Gremlins_, but even that is very different. We follow Jaime, he's a lonely young boy who is unliked by kids at school, and adults in his neighborhood. The movie begins with a scene from deep within the second act, which was an odd choice, but then takes us back to the present. The story is a little clunky for how simple a premise it has, but it still works. Is his stuffed bear alive? Probably not. Is his mother molesting him? Damn, that was random, I hope not. What could have easily just been a movie about an outcast boy, with some psychological issues, reaches another level when he finds what he calls trollalogs - essentially ancient primates - and starts feeding them the awful people he knows. There's a subplot about him being infatuated with his babysitter, but it never goes anywhere, and really feels tacked on, like it was just added to pad the runtime. There is a swerve ending that makes _The Pit_ feel like a long episode of Tales from the Dark Side. A little goofy in a few scenes, but overall pretty good.
Made before monsters were CGI, and very reminiscent of Goonies and others, it has actually aged quite well It's kid friendly horror, and watchable enough - but not great
