This is very much a time capsule film where you have to go in knowing it's going to be casually racist and blithely reference child exploitation while also being a screwball comedy with a slight case of confused identity. You can never really take it seriously, though, which is intentional. It's very much an old adventure comedy, and fits squarely into the "Bad Movie Night" category. Because of its mediocrity and being doubly out of time (a period piece set in the fifties, made in the seventies, and wildly out of touch with current social mores), it's extra goofy. The dynamic between Beaudray and Wanda is a pure cliche combo of "clash of the sexes" and "emotionally and socially underdeveloped adult male unwillingly develops emotional bond with young female character while fighting it every step of the way", and it all stems from Peter Fonda's character's own immaturity. It's the bread and butter of Boomer-made action-comedies. The "love" bit never goes anywhere, thankfully, but it's obviously something that wouldn't have flown even in the late eighties, and exists as a comedic plot based on "the way things were" in the last days that people would have considered making a flimsy adventure comedy about it. Brooke Shields is effortlessly hilarious and strikingly beautiful in her awkward lankiness, and the mediocre acting (just as much a feature of the film itself) only adds to the humor and charm. It's obviously going to be incredibly offensive with the "Vengeful Native American spirits" hook that almost entirely siderails the film ~45 minutes in (though not as offensive as how Native Americans are still treated by the Federal and State governments to this day), so definitely consider the audience when watching. Without considering any of the previous issues of the film, the ending is poorly constructed, has some misguided and laughable attempts at high key drama, and doesn't really work, reeking of a mid-production hatchet job. It has its undeniable charm, though.
I might have enjoyed this movie more were it not for all the references to and inuendos of pedophilia. and was that shootout supposed to be comedy? if not it was pretty insulting
