Breathtaking action and emotion! Extraordinary Mission centers on an undercover cop trying to take down a massive drug trafficking syndicate within the Golden Triangle (essentially a narcotics ring between China and Thailand). As he is tested time and time again due to suspicions that he is a mole, he becomes addicted to drugs and has to fight his addiction while remaining loyal to his duty as a good cop. Extraordinary Mission features a strong narrative filled with great character arcs for almost everyone involved, all of whom are interesting and logically connected to one another. You truly feel there is a clear reason why the characters are the way they are, as Felix Chong’s script allows for witty dialogue and clever twists and turns that make total sense and never feel forced. The story delivers effective drama. Lead actor Xuan Huang, who plays Lin Kai, does an excellent job portraying a cop slowly losing his grip on sanity as he travels down a dark and treacherous path inside the drug trade. On the flip side, we see him desperately trying to hold onto his honest cop persona, which serves as a reminder of whose side he is on. It is this blend of internal and external conflict—rarely explored in movies with this kind of premise—that adds a much deeper layer to an otherwise redundant plot, and it is expertly executed here. The supporting cast lends the film a great deal of background and credibility as well, from Kai’s captain, who first assigned the mission to this poor soul, to Eagle, the syndicate leader. The bonds formed between the characters are engaging and filled with depth, with an even stronger connection among the three main characters providing a massive boost of both emotional and narrative resonance. The cinematography surrounding the film, as well as the settings, special effects, and highly realistic, ballistic gunfights, are undoubtedly the driving force and a major highlight. Meticulously choreographed fight sequences and car chases bring Extraordinary Mission to life, delivering an original action piece with top-tier CGI elements. The fact that real, unique firearms and minimal stunt doubles were used during filming genuinely sets it apart. The editing team took meticulous care with the film so that every explosion, gunshot, and movement matches the characters and the sound design, creating an elegant crossover between wide, kinetic shots and more focused angle combinations. This gives the film a sense of urgency and speed rarely seen in militaristic action movies. Extraordinary Mission also features one of the best motorcycle chase sequences and easily one of the coolest scenes in the movie. I also loved the well-chosen soundtrack; the score by Chan Kwong-wing and TaQ Sakakibara is energetic and fitting, with a theme song whose lyrics perfectly describe exactly what Kai is going through in his mind and heart. Overall, Extraordinary Mission is a fast-paced, intriguing, original, and character-rich action thriller that serves as both a tribute to the police force's anti-drug efforts and a gripping takedown of criminals, wrapping up with an exemplary finale. Highly recommended!
