White Nights A wonderful film by Luchino Visconti, which gives us incredible feelings from the beginning to the end of the film, perfectly expressed by the acting of Marcello Mastroianni as usual impeccable. A neorealist love story not so far away even today, despite the fact that several years have passed, and this is what I love about Italian neorealist cinema. Beautiful background music, wonderful dance scene and ... *SPOILER AHEAD* ..the final image of a heartbroken and devastated Mastroianni watching from the bridge where they met, after a snowfall, the woman he loves so much, smile and leave with another man. One of the best shots I've ever seen. 7.5/10

Sinceramente questo film mi ha deluso molto. Bellissimo film, ma poco fedele a Le notti bianche. Mi è sembrato molto distante dal pensiero di Dostoevskij: il problema del protagonista non è la timidezza, ma la sua inadeguatezza al vivere, il suo distacco dal mondo, il vivere solo interiormente… e soprattutto NON ha un nome. Dare un nome al Sognatore, secondo me, gli fa perdere tutta la sua bellezza. Poi c’è troppo focus sulla donna, quando invece il vero protagonista dovrebbe essere lui. Mi è difficile considerarla come un’opera autonoma, dato che prende ispirazione e presenta le stesse dinamiche de Le notti bianche, ma cambia completamente i protagonisti, come se non ne avesse compreso l’essenza. Nel film di Visconti sembra che il protagonista non abbia vissuto solo perché non ne ha avuto l’occasione, mentre nel romanzo non ha vissuto proprio perché incapace di abitare la realtà. È una differenza enorme. Sicuramente è un bellissimo film, ma essendo molto legata all’originale non riesco a separarli e, di conseguenza, faccio fatica ad apprezzare quest’ultimo.

Much better than the dour and mopey source material, White Nights is a beautifully shot film with touches of bittersweetness and humour which manages to make something of the rather one-note story on which it is based.
