One of the weirdest documentaries I've seen. Occasionally funny and certainly nostalgiac from a "bad home movie" perspective, I found it to be ultimately too self-absorbed and depressing to warrant too much attention.
The essence of a documentary brings pieces of life to the screen. Ross McElwee manages with this film to contain pieces of the lives of many spectators, of personal relationships, of the human being and its contradictions. This trip through the South of the United States is also a personal and passionate journey. The irony of his narration, of those moments in which he cannot sleep because doubts and fears assail him, contains the quality of a great work that has humor and wisdom.
