While the movie feels a bit dated in general, it lives off the performance by Charles Grodin. He makes about every scene feel cringe to the point where you feel uneasy as a viewer. Furthermore, the situation that one makes a big decision in life and gets immediately the feeling that it was a mistake has happened to most of us and that is what makes the situation relatable. This movie is still strong and particular, even after more than 50 years.

There's a little bit of mean-spiritedness here (although it's tempered by Berlin's intelligent, humane performance) but I couldn't help but find it quite funny. Grodin is so smarmy and ridiculous, and watching him lie and contort and scheme is a fun time. "There's no deceit in the cauliflower." Indeed.

I don't watch many movies from this era, and this film was a good reminder of why this is true. Every scene was twice as long as it needed to be and it felt like the story was being played out in real time. It didn't help that I have never been a fan of Grodin.
