Initial reaction. The good: Great opening, good concept, okay to superb acting. The bad: Forgettable popcorn flick, bad delivery, overlooked plot holes, uncomfortable transitions between locations, terrible dialogue, crappy taping of a fantastic franchise to a mundane sci-fi horror, horrendous tension and character building, overall typical space movie that makes 'LIFE' look fantastic.
I was excited because I loved Cloverfield! But this cliche filled movie was just terrible. Except from saying the word "Cloverfield" a few times, There is nothing "Cloverfield" about this movie. Many unexplained plot lines... And ugh... Tam... Everyone on the ship talks English, Tam understands English... She must, Since they have long conversations and Schmidt doesn't translate it. Seems like Tam refuses to talk English and speaks Chinese instead! It annoyed me, because it just didn't make any sense.
Once again, a case where idiotic reviewers dump on a movie that doesn't deserve it. What was soo bad about it? Was it just not what you were expecting? Did it just confuse you? I stayed away from this movie this whole time because of its reputation, but now I regret it. It's solid sci-fi, with real questions. Love the way it tied into the franchise too.
I don't get why people are complaining because the science in this movie is unrealistic. It's a fictional movie, not a documentary. Great movie, far better than 10 Cloverfield Lane, I can't wait for the next one.
Gotta aplaud the genius marketing move by Netflx but the movie itself is pretty meh and most likely would have bombed in theaters (especially without the Cloverfield branding). Looking at it as a standalone movie it's a standard and generic space station horror movie verging on being bad with really badly written dialogue. But I really like how it ties together (altough rather loosely) the other two Cloverfield movies (who I think were both absolutely fantastic) and sets up future installments with unlimited story options (I hope they stay with the monster angle tough. The fourth and upcoming 'Overlord' heavily hints at somethin supernatural a la demons involved). Altough it very much feels like they made (or bought) a standard sci-fi movie and just slapped on everything Cloverfield related with reshoots. So if you want to watch a simple standalone sci-fi movie you can just skip this one unless you're a big sci-fi fan as it does have decent actor performances, great CGI and cinematography but wonky writing. But if you're like me and have been reading countless forums and theories about the Cloverfield monsters and aliens and their origins then definitely watch this. But be prepared to leave with more questions than you came in with (as was almost to be expected with JJ involved).
