I generally tend to watch a Rainer Werner Fassbinder film every 6 moths or so. He is an OK director, quite good maybe, but I just can't embrace his films. Something just doesn't click with me. Herzog and Wenders I feel similarly about. Even though I do love a few of their films, their bodies of work in general aren't that impressive to me. I've been looking forward to watching this though as I saw a clip once from it that had the most astonoshing camera move.And yup, it's there. The drinks cabinet. Fantastic! 57 minutes in! That camera move has been i my head for years. Good to finally see it again. As a a film overall, it's good, very good in fact but not quite what I was expecting. The premise makes it sound like it would have more conflict or drama or even comedy but it's a fairly subdued affair. but it works well. Visually it's possibly the best I have seen from Fassbinder though, along with the highly stylized Querelle (1982). And I'd certainly recommend checking this out to anyone interested in cinematography. In fact it may be the best shot single-location film I have ever seen.
