Pretty damn good for a 1978 TV movie. Blu-ray looks amazing too. Super impressive.
It struggles to rise above its TV trappings, but it's still a pretty solid thriller. For a TV movie from the 70s it's actually aces. John Carpenter really starts to develop his voice here with this Hitchcock-light stalker flick.
So strange to see a Carpenter film without a Carpenter score.
Very fun to watch a John Carpenter movie this early. This is the one he met his future wife and collaborator, Adrienne Barbeau, on and Lauren Hutton often refers to this as one of the best things she's worked on. Successful suspense built up, but not as violent as future Carpenter would typically be. Of particular note is the score, which appears to be stock from an old episode of Columbo or something, which Carpenter was always very particular about. This may have been the experience that told him he wanted custom scores in the future...would love to know if that hypothesis is right but couldn't find it in any interviews. Worthy of a watch.
