What a waste of a great premise! As inspiring as it is to see a black doctor in such an early movie, the script largely sticks to stereotypes for characters white and black, with only few and brief instances of insight. The setup carries the film only so far, and except for a great first and last ten minutes, "No Way Out," (a perplexingly titled film, by the way) by and large falls completely flat.
A black doctor is accused of murdering a patient by the victim's brother. This film somehow felt like an episode of _The Twilight Zone_ to me. It's shot almost exclusively indoors, and this gives the movie the atmosphere of a small, contained story. I love Sidney Poitier, and he was very believable as a doctor. The first part of the film plays almost like a slow medical drama with racial tensions, while the second half turns violent and chaotic.
