Not a zombie movie really, it's more of a tale of voodoo. There are some striking black and white images and a likable main character. There just isn't a whole lot going on and I expected more from its tragic or maybe happy ending?
I used voodoo to cure my hemorrhoids.
Hooptober Twelve: Bark at the Moon edition "She makes a beautiful zombie doesn't she?" Those final 15 minutes are a blast. The slow build up really paid off. Anyway, Iwent blind into Jacques Tourneur's I Walked with a Zombie and didn't know what to expect. I was surprised it about was Vodou and mystery. Frances Dee is very good, I liked the songs that were sung and Carrefour, the crossroad zombie, was really creepy for its time. Going blind into these old horror movies is always a blast and I usually enjoy the atmosphere in these films. I'm kinda surprised that I Walked with a Zombie has only 43k views. It should have more. So if you haven't seen this one yet. Go check it out!
This movie was a hit in its time as it was the first introduction to the Voodoo religion for most viewers at the time. It has though not aged all too well as it not only shows the “superior colonialists” but there have also been many much better movies about Voodoo since. Still interesting to watch as a product of its time.
Strange movie with some interesting bits, but hampered by the horror movie framing and the of-a-time exoticism of the black cast. Still, I appreciated the attempts at grappling with colonialist exploitation even if the other elements (the love story especially) felt particularly dull. Beautiful cinematography throughout.
