The sixth movie and for many fans (myself included) the best of all. In 2002 they pulled an absolute madness out of their sleeve, a virtual reality video game where players could actually die if they lost. The Junior Detective League got trapped inside while in the real world there was a murder to solve. Conan had to enter the game, solve the virtual mystery with the help of Sherlock Holmes (YES, THE Sherlock Holmes as a game NPC which was very wtf haha), and find the connection to the real crime. It turned out meta in an incredibly satisfying way. The Victorian London of the game was atmospheric and gloomy. The Jack the Ripper aesthetic permeated everything, and there was constant tension because I knew the kids could die if they failed.
The revelation of who the game's "phantom" was and its connection to the real world case was emotionally devastating to me. A child genius who was used and discarded by adults, whose AI kept seeking justice even after his death... it was one of the saddest and best executed stories in the entire franchise. The moment Conan realized the truth and the way the "phantom" finally rested was genuinely moving.
Conan meeting Holmes was a dream come true for detective genre fans. The movie paid homage to the classics while telling its own story. One of the few that deserves an 8 without discussion. PS: Hope Elon Musk doesn't watch this movie.
