I know it's predictable. I know the jokes are bad. I know the story is as cookie-cutter as most of Hollywoods late 80s effort. ...BUT...I still like it. Why? John Candy's in it!! I don't know what it was with that man, but he's as charismatic and funny as ever in a movie that shouldn't really have worked at all. I don't say you should go out and buy it, but stick with it if you catch it on TV. ...and do catch the joke with the talking raccoons after the end credits.
This movie has such a great vibe of good old times! John Candy is very charismatic as usual, and the story is light and fun. This movie is something you can watch again and again.
Dan Aykroyd and John Candy deliver a ton of laughs in the John Hughes family comedy _The Great Outdoors_. When Roman crashes his brother-in-law’s family vacation with one of his own hilarity ensues as the two family try to get along at a lake resort. The story is well-written and has a bit of nostalgia for the outdoors that gives the film a certain charm. Most of the comedy relies on slapstick humor, but there’s also a good amount of satire as well. Still, the plot’s fairly rote and doesn’t have a lot of ambition. Yet, while it has a few weaknesses, _The Great Outdoors_ is a fun-filled comedy that’s quite entertaining.
Good fun movie for lovers of the Aykroyd and Candy humour. I certainly am and watch it as it is meant to watch. Light popcorn cinema where no thinking is asked for and required. Good fun.
