A pointed, snarky, rapid-fire comedy that's set within a series of prestigious government offices. With a dry British wit taking center stage, the loose backing plot is resigned to second fiddle until the third act. When the writing is this sharp and effective, though, that's perfectly fine by me. The meat of this story may be focused on the assistants and pages responsible for madly sprinting around the office on a whim, handling the brunt of a politician’s daily heavy lifting, but the sharpest satire is reserved for their bosses, the senators and secretaries who are more interested in photo ops and talking points than effecting any real change. A fast-paced, intelligent, blazing comedy with some ridiculously great one-liners, it wouldn't be nearly as funny if it weren't so sadly, bitterly true.
I don’t understand why they changed all the names.
This is very good, Peter Capaldi steals the whole film. Not to say that the actors aren't great, because everybody certainly hits their mark. All of the performers are given fantastic dialogue, and you can tell the creator of _Succession_ had his hands in the writing of this. It really is the thing that elevates it beyond the average satire, there are so many quotable lines and memorable moments in it. It might be a little tricky to keep up with if you're not into politics, because it's dense, occasionally heavy on jargon and fast paced, but it isn't inaccessible if a non-native speaker like me is able to keep up. Visually, it isn't the most impressive thing you're going to see, but the editing and mockumentary style give the film enough of a personality. Its biggest problem are the American characters, who are nowhere near as colorful as the British ones. Every time it cuts to those characters, the film becomes a little less interesting. It's also too long, this would flow better with a few scenes cut out. 7.5/10
weird flex but okay ! x
In The Loop This film shines, by letting the actors just act. Some terrific dialogue and cringingly funny scenes. Seeing Capaldi rave like lunatic was great. Bonus points for Gandolfini. However, the plot felt like it needed a map to follow. 7/10 #NicksMiniReview https://t.co/nDQu9cJTFX
