[English + French] 🇬🇧🇺🇸 Pop Redemption (2013) by Martin Le Gall. On paper, the idea is original. It moves away from the usual bourgeois family dinners or vacations for actors paid to shoot a movie on the other side of the world in some paradise location (a frequent formula in French comedies), but it doesn’t work. We follow the story of a group of friends in their thirties who have known each other since their teenage years, but this is badly conveyed on screen. Outside of their metal band, there’s little sense of real connection between them. Two of them are trying to live an adult life, with Pascal running a restaurant with his partner and JP taking care of his family, while the other two seem stuck at age 17. Erik lives an unstable life like a teenager who just ran away from home, and Alex is the weak point of the movie (a mix of every cliché about metal in the popular imagination, constantly acting spoiled, manipulative, and reckless while being the self-proclaimed leader of the group). The plot is built around an accident that in real life would have been solved quickly thanks to the factual evidence at the scene. The movie struggles to take us from one place to another, instead keeping us stuck in a village festival to string together absurd situations. The local police seem exhausted with only one patrol available in the area, and the police station (more interested in making music than doing their job) destroys any sense of urgency. It’s just another French comedy like the ones that come out every year. With no real intention of doing something original, the movie locks itself into clichés of the world it portrays while adding the usual habits of this type of production (stereotypical characters, artificial conflicts, predictable reconciliations, small village settings with the inevitable festival, forced humor, caricatured representation of a subculture, and an expected happy ending). 🇫🇷 Pop Redemption (2013) Par Martin Le Gall. Dans l’idée c’est original, on part loin des repas de famille bourgeois ou des vacances pour les acteurs défrayés par le tournage d’un film à l’autre bout du monde dans un coin paradisiaque si fréquents des comédies Française mais ça ne marche pas. On suit l’épopée d’une bande de d’amis trentenaire qui se connaissent depuis leur adolescence mais qui est terriblement mal retranscrit à l’écran : on peine à ressentir une complicité entre eux en dehors de leur groupe de métal. Deux d’entre eux essayent de vivre une vie d’adulte, Pascal qui a un restaurant à tenir avec sa conjointe, et JP père de famille tandis que les deux autres semblent bloqués à 17 ans. Erik vit une existence qui semble instable comme un adolescent qui vient de fuguer et Alex qui représente le point noir du film : un condensé de tous les clichés possibles de l’univers du métal dans l’imaginaire collectif enchaînant caprices, manipulations et décisions irréfléchies tout en étant chef auto proclamé de ce petit groupe. Le scénario qui repose sur un accident qui aurait été réglé rapidement grâce aux preuves factuelles présentes sur les lieux. Le film peine à nous transporter d’un endroit a l’autre préférant nous enfermer dans une fête de village afin d’enchainer des situations absurdes dans lesquels la police apparait à bout de souffle avec une seule patrouille disponible dans le pays et un commissariat local plus occuper à faire de la musique que leur travail achève la crédibilité de l’urgence. C’est une comédie Français de plus comme il en sort tous les ans. Sans réel envie de faire quelque chose d’original le film s’enferme dans les clichés du milieu représenté tout en ajoutant les sempiternelles habitudes inhérentes à ce type de film (Les personnages stéréotypés, disputes artificielles, réconciliations prévisibles, décors de village avec la fête qui va avec, humour forcé, caricature des milieux représentés et fin attendu.).
