This movie reminded of a special feature I saw a long time ago on the Spirited Away DVD. The specifics aren't important, but Hayao Hiyazaki made the animators observe life. They emulated a snake falling from a tree when animating a dragon falling. It looked life-like and magical at the same time. No one can argue the quality of Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend is on par with a masterpiece like Spirited Away. I'm arguing that the reason Baby made me so angry is that the filmmakers didn't seem to care. The dinosaurs looked fake as hell. Their movement was unnatural. The story was fine, but I can't forgive them for how bad they messed up the dinosaurs.
Rated PG family movies sure were different back then. Other than the topless scenes, I had to chuckle when one characters line was “If she was my wife, I’d whip that bitch”, lol for a kids movie. But for quality, the story felt stale and dragged on and on. I did chuckle when the soldiers were spraying their beverages in Nigel’s face and the gimp footed dinosaur effects but it still didn’t save the entertainment value.
I remember having the book and tape set of this movie along with Raiders of the Lost Ark and other films. Maybe if I had seen this when I was a kid it might hold some sentimental value to me. And even acting like I haven’t seen Jurassic Park - the dinosaurs don’t look like dinosaurs… more like puppies or dogs… maybe because that is how they kinda act. The story is ok but it is lackluster. Honestly I think they would have been better served if they took Baby and their Mother and set the movie in Scotland and made a fun Loch Ness Monster movie. To be honest it was Baby’s yellow eyes that killed it for me.
A grass eating brontosaurus apparently eats people when they are mad at them enough. The movie is Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park. If Jurassic Park had rubber dinosaurs. Or if Indiana Jones’ action was more silly than exciting. Yet, nostalgia is why I give it a 7. Funny that the late Jerry Goldsmith said the Mummy was the worst movie he scored and he wouldn’t do the sequel. No, he did worse movies like this, Congo, the Medicine Man… At least his scores weren’t ever bad.
THIS IS TRULY AWFUL. And, as usual, the baddies are English and the goodies are American. Oh, FFS!! I am beginning to avoid anything made in America, whenever.
