Just absolutely rips from the very first second. Cobain looks incredible – Im not sure if it’s how he’s lit or if it’s just his yellow-ish aura but he looks like a golden god from the moment he starts strumming About A Girl. And he’s only wearing a cardigan. There’s obviously a fascinating but eerie not-quite-sureness about it all that makes it so extraordinary, something in Cobain’s face throughout that you can’t stop looking at and can’t fully name: not sad exactly, not happy, just somewhere very far away, occasionally coming back to say something funny about the flowers or the next song and then going back there again. Insane setlist choice btw which shouldn’t work but is actually perfect. The Meat Puppets bit is great, the Bowie cover has that incredible droned-out guitar solo, and then obviously Where Did You Sleep Last Night at the end, which I think is one of the greatest vocals in rock history and certainly his. That contradictory alchemy of beauty and ugliness, pleasure and pain, culminates in this performance and as last words on record go that final wrenching “throooooough” is hard to beat. One of the great documents of anything, I think. Not just music. Anything
This isn’t just a performance, it’s an exposed nerve. Stripped of distortion and chaos, Kurt Cobain delivers what might be the most emotionally naked performance ever caught on tape. The acoustic setting transforms Nirvana’s catalog into something more spectral and solemn, while covers like “The Man Who Sold the World” and “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” feel as if they’ve been spiritually reclaimed. There’s a fragile, heroin-hazed brilliance to Kurt here, a man barely holding on, but channeling his entire soul through the mic. It’s uncomfortable and cathartic, devastating and beautiful. Easily one of the best live albums ever, and maybe the truest glimpse we ever got into who Kurt was underneath the noise. Unforgettable.
