3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘Brüno’: 1. Sacha Baron Cohen is the bravest human being in entertainment. 2. On par with Borat, but in a VERY different and a bit more extreme way. 3. My favorite part: “Has anyone ever told you you look like Enrique Iglesias?”
Let’s be clear, this movie is NOT for everyone. I’d go as far as saying it’s not for many at all. But those that like it, will LOVE it. It’s absolutely hilarious on a Borat/Jackass kind of way, and easily the raunchiest of all its counterparts. Hilarious, but be warned. Rating: 4.5/5 - 9/10 - Highly Recommend
The story of how I ended up watching Brüno is pretty funny. I went to the cinema to see another movie, but tickets were sold out and since I was already there I decided to go see this one. Without knowing absolutely anything. Without having seen Borat. Without having any idea who Sacha Baron Cohen was or what type of humor he made. Imagine my face for an hour and a half. It was a constant "wtf I don't understand what I'm watching" journey.
A gay and extravagant Austrian fashion journalist putting real people in situations so uncomfortable I didn't know whether to laugh or run away. There were moments when I laughed a lot, others when the secondhand embarrassment was so intense I wanted to hide under the seat. The adopted baby scene left me with my mouth open. The interview with the Alabama parents, willing to have their kids do outrageous things for a bit of fame, was one of the most disturbing things I'd seen. And the ending in the MMA ring was absolute madness I didn't expect at all.
Years later I saw Borat and everything made sense. I understood the style, the humor, the character. And although Brüno seemed less effective to me because the character was more exaggerated and some jokes felt forced, I have to admit Baron Cohen got into situations where anyone else would have run away. Watching it without context was a unique experience, for sure.
Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedy genius but "Bruno" is really bad...
